European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
