The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a significant awards ceremony approaches, one notices a clamor for introducing additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession for the industry of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored that year
  • Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, however the design behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles in the world and have been for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
